A European Country Getaway ~ 1930s Stone Cottage In Connecticut!
About this bed and breakfast
Located in Connecticut, this attractive bed and breakfast for $155 per night is a fantastic choice for your next trip. The Windy Top Cottage is an old stone building constructed in 1932 by H. L. Bitter, a wealthy Hartford businessman. This area of Granby was a favorite of the Hartford elite for a place to “summer” in the early part of the 20th Century. The cottage was the place where the domestic staff stayed when the family was staying in North Granby. With an elevation of 970, the home once had views of Hartford. Today after lots of trees grew, views are still just a minute away and the cool breezes remain! Dawn and Ken have refreshed the interior with newly sanded "pumpkin pine" floors and warm, decorator wall tones. There is over 1000 of living space. The bath fixtures are original from the 30s and the huge stone fireplace has propane fired gas logs for cozy winter nights. The large first-floor great room also has a small coffee service, there is NO KITCHEN and we are NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN. The second-floor bedrooms are spacious and yet very cozy. The home has an English Country House feel with all furnishings provided by Dawn’s painted furniture business: A Girl With A Paintbrush. Flower boxes adorn several windows that overlook an herb and flower garden. The property is accessed by original brick walkways and lead to the private entry door. Guests will be able to use the entire building with the exception of the garage bays for their private use. A private exterior patio is located out the back door with old patio chairs, benches, and a firepit. Amenities include freshly laundered soft cotton bedding and towels, bathrobes, hypoallergenic or goose down pillows, cozy sofas, and chairs, comfortable carpeting, and rugs. The linen closet has an ample supply of bar soaps, shampoos, a hair dryer and a first aid box. The spaces are accessorized with old framed artwork, mirrors, clocks and folk art. We offer a quiet, relaxing experience without TV, with old books, old magazines, and games to enjoy a special time with friends or loved ones. Excellent wireless service to keep tabs on the world if you need to. The coffee service provides a toaster oven, a French press and a Keurig single cup coffee maker with fresh cream and organic sugar. Our goal is to greet you and then leave you to enjoy the cottage and all the surrounding amenities and beauty at your leisure. We live in the main house so we are always available by text or cell phone. The beds are a king sized and a standard full sized. The south bedroom offers an antique double. We provide a complete list of emergency info in the unlikely event that you would need it. The exterior patio out the rear door is covered by an awning. The firepit makes great campfires for grilling hot dogs and making S'Mores. Granby is an "upscale", small suburban Hartford community with tons of nearby amenities and located in an area known for working dairy farms, equestrian centers, apple orchards and farm wineries Our beautiful community also offers self-serve farm stands, homemade ice cream stores, art galleries, country libraries as well as gourmand evening dining establishments. The Windy Top Cottage is located in an area with breathtaking views of Massachusetts (walk just a little more than a half mile to the amazing Mary Edwards Property) and a 5-minute drive from the best waterfalls in Connecticut! We are surrounded by thousands of acres of hiking/walking trails, a game refuge and several state forests. Our street has huge old oak trees with amazing old stone walls and is a local favorite for jogging and walking. Ask us to send you our "Granby Hiking Guide".... Connecticut is home to many historic covered bridges, waterfalls and a few ghost towns. See our local guidebook for more details. Book this 2 bedroom cottage in North Granby today! Windy top cottage was the perfect destination for our girls trip / birthday weekend. We had such an amazing time enjoying the quiet mornings outside, disconnected evenings in the cottage, and the beautiful town of Granby and surrounding areas. The cottage is even cuter than the pictures show (which is already so cute and what drew us in in the first place). There was even a welcome sign with our names on it when we arrived!
It is obvious that so much time, thought and love went into creating this beautiful space and the details have not gone unnoticed. From the amazing room service offered, to the most extensive collection of bathroom essentials and local recommendations, Windy top surpassed our expectations and was our favorite stay to date. If you are a fan of high tea you cannot miss Dawn’s beautifully curated “picnic lunch for 2”. It was prepared and ready for us as soon as we arrived with the most gorgeous table setting and she so graciously clears everything away so quickly we barely knew she was there, it was like magic!
Thank you so much to Dawn and Ken who made us feel so welcome from the second we arrived to the minute we left. If you’re thinking about booking windy top cottage let this be your push to just do it!

The place was exactly as it was on the advert. A quintessential cottage in the middle of greenery.
Attention to details was impeccable. I loved most having a jar of honey in addition to the usual white sugar, Splenda and Equal as sweeteners; box of tissues on all bedside tables; supply of plush 2-ply toilet paper instead of a single ply … these minute details were greatly appreciated!
We had a grand time! It was a cozy, quiet and comfortable respite from our daily concrete jungle routine.
Many thanks, Dawn & Ken.

Upon first sight of the cottage was like stepping into a fairy tale back in time, Hansel and Gretel. The outside was so pretty, surrounded by trees and flowers and a chipmunk was there to greet us. But stepping inside was amazing, tastefully decorated and many amenities at your fingertips. A plate of cookies with real whipped strawberries 🍓 frost.. delicious. Ken and Dawn were friendly and accommodating. Would absolutely recommend.

This was a very nicely appointed and decorated stone cottage reminiscent of ones we had stayed in while touring the British Isles. While there was no running water or bathroom on the first floor there was a full size refrigerator and the hosts had provided two pitchers of water for our coffee and tea. And there were lots of flavors to choose from. There also were apothecary jars of candy. Terry robes and slippers were also provided.
The cottage is part of the detached garage next to the house where the owners live. When we drove in Ken came out to greet us and had all our names on a welcoming slate at the door. But we felt very independent in our cottage and did not see him again. The whole property is very lovely.
It was the last night of a trip with a lot of driving and we had driven almost 500 miles that day so we didn't have much of a chance to enjoy our cottage or the area. I would like to come back again and explore this more rural, hilly, and wooded area of Connecticut.

A friend and I had a one night stay at the cottage and absolutely loved it! The coziness and attention to detail were unmatched by other rentals! I cannot wait to bring others to this amazing little get away! Thank you so much for having us! Until next time!

We are so fortunate to have found the perfect place to celebrate our anniversary. Windy Top Cottage is a treasure. Every detail made us feel welcome and pampered. Granby provided plenty of fun and excitement, and it was a joy to return to our beautiful, cozy cottage after our busy days exploring. Just loved it!

What a unique place for a special getaway weekend. My wife and I spend our 19th anniversary here and we were more than pleased with the accommodation.

Upon arrival we were greeted with a fire in the fireplace, a custom welcome sign, and soft music playing.
The ambiance was adorable and the decor was to die for, and the cottage was spotless!
The sleeping accommodations were super comfortable.
The reasons I didn’t give a 5 star rating:
I would have liked a less sheer curtain in the bathroom. I realize we are in the middle of the woods, but for those of us visiting from suburbia or the city, we can be a little shy about using the restroom and showering in front of sheer window coverings. Maybe it’s a “me problem”. The shower was also very dark once the shower curtain was closed.
My 5’11’ husband hit his head on the living room chandelier several times when standing up from the couch, and the steep stairs may not be suitable for elderly guests.
Other than that, there was so much attention to detail. It felt very welcoming and was beyond adorable! The guide to the city was very helpful. This is definitely the kind of hospitality any VRBO should exhibit!

Ken and Dawn were amazing, accommodating hosts who really went the extra mile for us with their communication and hospitality. The house was perfectly quiet, clean, and extra-cozy with the fire already going for us and the beds warmed via special mattress covers. We were delighted by everything, and we were sorry to leave.

This stay was one of the best stays we've had for a rental. The location was in a beautiful neighborhood but also close to wonderful restaurants, hiking, and shopping. The cottage was so cute and cozy!! We arrived to some relaxing music, the fireplace on, and a yummy cake (we were celebrating my husband's 50th). There was a lovely coffee station with a couple of different machines and many options for coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. Although there was no kitchen, there was a fridge and a toaster oven and all the things you would need for a shorter stay. The bedding was great quality, and the bathroom was totally stocked with everything you could possibly need or may have forgotten. The hosts were nearby and there for questions but gave you all the privacy you needed. I would highly recommend this property and hosts and hope to come back again!

Just a great, romantic atmosphere at this cottage. It's so relaxing to sit by the propane fireplace and read, look at your ipad, play cribbage, etc. We like it kind of cold when we sleep at night so we turned the heat down a bit and were cold when we went up to bed. Surprise, the heating blanket was on much to our satisfaction. Ken and Dawn thought about everything. We are definitely going back this summer.

What a peaceful and relaxing stay in this lovely cottage! Waking up to the beautiful sunrises from the bedroom window and sitting by the fire reading and enjoying a hot tea was the perfect start to the day. From the decor to the cozy beds, blankets and towels, to the coffee/tea/candy station and local hiking and guidebook, Ken and Dawn have thought about everything to make your stay in their cottage a pleasure!

This is a charming cottage that looks very European. Stone walls and French decor mixed with antiques makes for a beautiful space. Ken and Dawn are thoughtful and knowledgeable owners offering great advise on where to go and what to see in the beautiful Granby area. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and look forward to coming back.

Heavenly!
The most beautiful, charming little cottage, just what we needed to get away from the hustle and bustle. Tranquil and romantic, with Ken and Dawn as perfect hosts. We truly enjoyed the nature trails and solitude in close proximity, and of course the wildlife!

This adorable cottage exceeded our expectations. Dawn and Ken have created a relaxed country elegance that feels like you are far, far away from the hustle bustle of daily reality. I LOVE that there is no TV! But, no worries for those who can't tear themselves away from technology, the wifi connection is great.
I had the best rest in years sleeping in the super comfy bed with luxury bedding. The hosts have clearly anticipated their guests needs and have created an ambience that is memorable.
Granby is a hidden gem of New England charm, with friendly locals, surprisingly great food (try "The Barn") and awesome hiking. Enders Falls was a fantastic Granby find. Just a short walk from the parking lot are gorgeous waterfalls. I can not do them justice by description, they must be experienced.
Dawn and Ken were top notch hosts, as was their equally charming Bombay Cat, "Luna".
Obviously, we loved our experience from start to finish and would highly recommend Windy Top Cottage.

Comfort and luxury combined
“Windy Top” packs a European-style luxury home into a quaint stone cottage in the unassuming town of North Granby. Ken and Dawn have attended to every detail from beautiful French antique furniture to a 5-star hotel-style tea and coffee bar, to my personal favorite, the heated mattress pads. We felt like royalty transported to a European country vacation setting while only 2 hours drive from our home in Boston. We took advantage of the local hiking and fantastic dining options suggested by the extremely thorough guides put together by our hosts. The whole experience was a great reminder that we have incredible a adventures available to us without even having to get on a plane, and Windy Top provided quintessential New England getaway! We will definitely be back!!

Simply Perfect!
I was looking for a getaway place to spend time with an old friend. Windy Top Cottage was simply perfect! We enjoyed hours of conversation by the fire with hot drinks. Our hosts, Ken and Dawn were welcoming and helpful. They have thought of everything and the little touches of hospitality and decor all work together to provide a comfortable atmosphere. The surroundings are so peaceful. The Connecticut scenery in the area is beautiful with many trails to enjoy and the nearby town has just enough to add to the enjoyment of the stay with good restaurants, a grocery store and a TJMaxx.
This is the kind of place you could retreat to annually just to get away from it all.

Perfect
This was just what was needed for a romantic getaway close to home. The cottage is so lovely we didn't even leave for dinner. We had the wine and cheese plate after a late lunch and it took us through the night. The perfect escape from this modern, chaotic world.

Cutest cottage ever
Everything in this cottage was so well thought out. Thoughtful and practical details decoratively done. Breakfast was blueberry pancakes and sausage, delicious and inexpensive. Enjoyed the snacks at night, too. Great communication. Very quiet country setting. Beautifully done in the most charming, comfortable, timeless way.

Great place but unfortunate events.
The property was great, House was very cozy but construction on site made it noisy. We showed up and they were working on the roof so we had to listen to hammering the first two days. No big deal, we understood. Our last day there we were trying to take a nap and woke up to construction equipment being driven around the house. Turns out they were working on the septic system. We decided we’d just go out into town but couldn’t even leave, I was parked in by a big truck. The cottage started to wreak of sewage and that’s when I got irritated. We went away for a nice quiet weekend and I was just disappointed. I wish they would’ve at least given us a heads up.. we would’ve understood. Just unfortunate timing. Other than that the place was great.

The Stone Cottage was everything everyone has said x 10! We will be back for a longer stay. The location was also perfect for all points in New England,
The cottage itself was beyond words. Ken & Dawn were great hosts!

Wonderful hosts!
Ken and Dawn are very friendly and easy to work with. Besides their own unique property, they also manage a second very unique place in the area, the Loft at Lost Acres...we would love to bring the whole family in at a future date and use both properties!

Great Getaway
My friend and I really needed a moms weekend and rented Windy top this past weekend. What a beautiful, storybook type place it is! The hosts, Ken and Dawn were extremely accommodating and we were so thankful for their generosity. There is a coffee maker, Kuerig, and plenty of snacks in the small kitchen area. There is a fridge as well. The little touches around the cottage were charming such as the question and answer book on the coffee table, the books found in the nooks and crannies tied with lace. The hot water and shower pressure were amazing, better than my house. There was plenty of information left in the cottage regarding the surrounding area and everything we wanted to do was within 10 minutes of the cottage. I am coming back as soon as I can with my husband.

Fairytale cottage!
This truly was my Happy Place! I felt like I was living in a fairy tale. It was such a privelege to be there! From the small details, the ever present fireplace privilege, the over all stone surroundings of the walls, the hand painted furniture and awesome decorations made it such a warm and welcoming place to be. Ken and Dawn were extremely helpful and gracious the entire stay. Thank you for opening your home to give joy to others. This was an outstanding experience for me!

Super cozy cottage!
My boyfriend and I had such a wonderful stay! The cottage is clean and very well decorated. The shower had a great water pressure, and there are plenty of extra toiletries in case you forgot anything.
Ken and Dawn provided plenty of snacks (chips, granola bars, etc) and drinks--loved the candy bar! Also, on our last night, Ken built us the perfect fire. He also provided us with supplies to make s'mores. It was so difficult to leave!
The cottage is located near plenty of nature trails and some great farms. I highly recommend checking out Sweet Wind Farm for maple syrup and Sweet Pea Farms (Hayes) for some great goat cheese. There are also TONS of suggestions provided in the very helpful guide.
We will definitely be back!
