Enchanting 7BR Villa: Event Hall, Horses, Labyrinth, Wellness Center, fresh eggs
About this villa rental
Located in New Mexico, this lovely villa for $359 per night is a fantastic option for your next vacation. Come to relax and play at a beautiful recreational retreat on 186 gorgeous acres in northern New Mexico. The spacious villa sits on a mountain ridge, surrounded by pine and juniper forest, that overlooks a valley of pastures. Enjoy spectacular sunrises on the huge wrap-around porch while getting your day started with a warm cup of coffee or tea and watching the horses graze. The villa, apartment, and all 186 acres are exclusive for you to enjoy with your reservation. There are five splendid bedrooms in the main villa with comfortable beds, plenty of space, and artwork abound. There is also an apartment, which has its own kitchen, next to the event hall and the entire property is available for your booking. We have only one group of guests at any one time staying overnight. The ranch is ideal for large groups and we frequently accommodate twenty or more people. Leaping Deer Ranch has a wonderful 1600 square foot event hall. It comes equipped with tables and chairs that can accommodate up to 60 people. The event hall has been used for wedding receptions and ceremonies, corporate events, community gatherings, and yoga retreats. The event hall has its own kitchen and restroom. Use of the hall is not included in reservation through Vrbo so please call if you want to add it to your stay. It's a great space for any event. The kitchen is amazing and fully equipped to serve large groups of people. An abundance of granite countertop space and a large island. You’ll be able to fit all the cooks and guests in the kitchen to make huge meals and entertain everyone. There are two dishwashers, a wine and beer fridge, a paella pan, a vita mix, six burner stove, a stocked coffee and tea bar, and a breakfast nook in the kitchen. The Great room is fantastic! It has a beautifully tiled fireplace (wood), oriental rugs, soaring ceilings, lots of seating, and wonderful arched windows to let in the moonlight or watch the stars. Adjoining the Great room is a large dining room that can be configured to seat large groups to dine. The dining room has its own custom tiled fireplace (gas). There is a large barbecue grill on the garden patio. The front garden has a magnificent iron horse statue, Paco by Siri Hollander. Paco stands watch over the valley amidst an aspen grove, wild rose bushes, and stalks of mullein. In the front garden, there is a bonfire pit area that is surrounded by stone benches. When weather conditions are favorable the staff can be available to assist in the preparation and starting of a bonfire. There are very low levels of light pollution at Leaping Deer Ranch, so be sure to plan to do some star gazing during your stay. The night skies here are one of our very favorite features of the Ranch. We rescued Athena, Ginger, Cheyenne, and Misty (our four quarter horses) from the slaughterhouse in 2009. They have been out to pasture at Leaping Deer Ranch ever since. They are super spoiled and have a great life. They love to meet guests at the ranch. Ginger is a bit shy. The horses like to spend most of the day near the lake. Feel free to go for a walk through the fields to meet the horses and bring them some treats. Note: the horses don’t like dogs, don’t bring your dogs to meet the horses. We have an extensive art collection at the ranch. There are 31 fiber art pieces on display throughout the villa. The pieces are extraordinarily intricate and constitute one of the largest private collections of fiber art in the country. The property has previously been used for modeling shoots, television series sets (Longmire), and even for a custom vehicle calendar photo shoot. It is truly beautiful at Leaping Deer Ranch so be sure to bring your best cameras because you’ll get some magnificent images. From the expansive wrap-around porch, you can look across the valley and see the wagon wheel rut trails from when the Santa Fe trail route passed through the area 170 years ago. Guests are welcome to hike and explore the property, visit with the horses, and enjoy the natural beauty and energy that our land has blessed us with. There are many species of birds, wildflowers, hummingbirds, butterflies, insects, mushrooms, deer, elk, foxes, coyotes, and even an occasional sighting of a bobcat on the property. Be careful when bouldering up the ridge as many of the rocks are loose. There is a small cave on the north side of the ridge, go explore and see if you can locate it. A lot of people like to climb up on the rocks and find a spot to meditate. Amenities We have a hot tub that is a great place to enjoy star gazing. It needs to be said again, the night skies are spectacular if you have a telescope… bring it. The wifi network has eleven hotspot routers to allow for coverage through the villa, apartment, and hall. There are three custom tiled fireplaces. We are home to the largest labyrinth in the State of New Mexico. After a month of work to prepare the ground and moving tons and tons of rocks, there is now a beautiful 98-foot diameter Chartres replica labyrinth. People use the labyrinth for reflective walks and meditations, it is a great metaphor for our journey through life. We have free fresh eggs for you from our chickens. We also have some ducks. We have an outdoor movie theater. It easily can seat 36 people. To schedule a movie night you'll have to make arrangements 24 hours in advance so that I can set up the equipment. The projector is bluetooth and has a DVD player. Additional Services It will be best to coordinate these services before you arrive, but last minute requests will try to be filled. VRBO only has the capability to bill for lodging. We offer a lot of additional services that we have to bill for separately. Wanted the whole family together (there were 11 of us) and we fit just fine with plenty of room to spare.
Had a wonderful time!

We had a great weekend with our friends at the ranch. There were 23 of us in all, comprised of 6 families, and we were all super comfortable. We loved cooking in the giant kitchen, playing games at the giant dining table, and sitting by the fire in the evening for our white elephant exchange. We also got a lot of use out of the hot tub, and some of us enjoyed wonderful massages. The hosts were so friendly, helpful, and accommodating. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!

My family (ages 4-70) stayed at the property for 4 days and we enjoyed every minute of our visit. Each bedroom having an ensuite bath was perfect for our needs and the huge wrap-around porch was great for little kids to play.
We have relatives in Las Vegas and surrounding areas and were able to invite everyone over to the ranch for a potluck dinner one night. We had probably 30 adults plus little kids and had plenty of room in the kitchen and back porch for everyone to gather. The huge kitchen with 2 dishwashers came in handy!
Mostly we enjoyed the peace and quiet and beautiful scenery of the Ranch. Colin and the staff were all helpful but unobstrusive. We highly recommend this property for your next Family get-together.

A group of 7 old friends went to the villa and had a wonderful time. The house is great, the kitchen is first rate, and the location is as beautiful as the pictures on the site. The stargazing was truly world-class. We loved hiking on the ridge behind the house too.
Just one note of caution that the listing doesn't make clear: the caretakers of the ranch live very near to the rental and they are out about. They were perfectly lovely, but if for some reason you are looking for total seclusion, this probably isn't your best bet.
Other than that, go there, unwind, watch the stars, and have a blast

Our stay was amazing. Colin was a great host to work with, he was always available if we had questions or needed assistance. Beauitful sceneries and close to all our family in the area. We'll be back!

We had a great stay. The ranch staff was very friendly and went the extra mile to ensure our stay was great.

We had a great time staying at leaping deer. Colin is a great host quick on response and his crew is very helpful.
The house is like a dream house with lots of space and the additional apartment could easily sleep 28 people but we were only 10. Which made it super comfortable.
The kitchen is spacious and easy to work. The drawers are filled with all kinds of utensils and tools that you need.
The ranch dog fluffy was a great little addition and a super friendly and protective.
We took advantage of the hot tub almost every night. And the trails around the ranch.
There are horses on the property that Colin is rescuing. And they're very friendly and are just a little bit of a walk away from the ranch house.
The town of Las Vegas is really only about 10 minutes away. So as you're planning this just know there's a Walmart within 10 minutes.
We were also close enough to go to Taos for the day as well as to go snowboarding twice at Sipapu.
The house is large and in the winter the floors are cold. Just something to note.
Plenty of firewood though to keep the fireplaces going.
Also the chicken coop and the ducks are great addition and make you feel like a rancher since you're going to be using your food scraps to feed them.
Overall just an amazing stay and even though we have plans for next Christmas already, I honestly would love to stay at this house again.

I can't say enough good things about Leaping Deer Ranch. It is one of my favorites in the area. The accomodations are exceptional and the layout of the homestead easily accommodates small or large groups. Colin is a great host and is very responsive. We never have anything to worry about during our stays. I highly recommend Leaping Deer. We will certainly be back.

Owner is not friendly or personable. Overcharges and forced use of facilities and charges are not as stated on the website. Felt ripped off. Refused to pay forced charges.

Our family had a great time! Ample room, well furnished, beautiful sunrises and…. fresh eggs. Colin was available when we needed him. He helped us when we needed him. Highly recommend and will return. My only suggestion would be to label the light switches and steam clean the floors.

We were so impressed with everything this place offered. The house is so beautiful and has everything needed for a comfortable stay. The property is gorgeous and so relaxing. We loved exploring the property. There are so many cool spots for just sitting and enjoying the scenery. Finding the caves was a fun adventure for the kids and us. We really enjoyed visiting with the horses, chickens and ducks. The house is so well stocked. The kitchen has every spice, pan or gadget you could need for whatever cooking plans you have. We are already planning a trip back here. We absolutely loved this place!

Great place for family reunion
Leaping Deer Ranch was the perfect spot for our family to gather from CA, NM, and TX. 17 of us stayed in the rooms and other family members who live in the area came during the days to hang out. The big house is beautiful and spacious, and we made full use of the huge well-stocked kitchen to make meals. We also spent a lot of time on the giant wraparound porch enjoying the perfect summer weather and views and taking turns playing horseshoes. The host and staff were attentive and accommodating. Everyone loved the place and would be happy to go back.

Everything was clean, ready and relaxing. Welcome by “Fluffy” was great.
Fully equipped kitchen which was very well appointed with plates, silverware, pots, pans, coffee and coffee maker…commercial grade refrigerator large enough for lots of groceries. This is everything needed for a family gathering/reunion or large retreat. The main house and guest house both have washers and dryers. Bedrooms and adjoining bathrooms are clean, and bedding /mattresses are comfortable. Plenty of clean towels available. Dining room is spacious, hot tub is warm, and views spectacular. Colin was a great host.

Beautiful Space for Large Group
This property is so expansive and spacious, in all aspects. We had 14 adults and 7 children (all 5 and under) and there was plenty of space for all. We enjoyed the chance to spread out in the 7 bedrooms, and wander the massive property outside with walks and hikes. Highly recommend for large groups!

The size of the house is amazing. Rooms and bathrooms were private the casita had just the right amount of space and additional resources like an additional refrigerator. The kitchen is huge with enough counter space for everyone to help with the meal prep. Quite simply the property has immense potential and tremendous amounts of work are necessary to keep the place functioning.
This house was our 7th pre-holiday get away and our first outside Colorado. A wind storm knocked out power and thankfully the local electrical provider made repairs by the end of day….however a property on a well with 6 toilets and many folks needed a back up plan that was not in place. There were dirty towels left from the previous travelers in the main bathroom and leftover laundry in the bathroom cabinet. Spiderwebs over the curtains in the main room and clear evidence some couches had not been moved in a few travelers. The kitchen cabinets held leftover food of questionable age, a ton of cooking items haphazardly placed, and clearly not wiped from previous parties. The main bedroom was extremely cold, the door to the kitchen did not latch properly and was open at 4am one morning. The beautiful cooktop did not fully function and burners were clearly not calibrated. The large wind storm seemed to cause a bit of stress on the porch pillars.
In the end it will depend upon what each person wants out of the trip. It was good, it was not great. It fit the bill for us and if the priority is family and flexibility-this will be a good place for that. If you want Instagram perfect, this is not it.

We debated this rating at length because the property itself is truly 5-star. The location is perfect: secluded but only 10 minutes from town, views in every direction, and room to explore. The house is unique and gorgeous: a cook's dream kitchen, comfortable beds, wonderful outdoor spaces, and so huge that you could sleep a group at either end and never see each other. Unfortunately, it's the sheer size that's also the problem - it seems a bit too much for the lovely owner and his small team to handle without more help, and the administration suffers a bit.
The house sleeps 28 but the price is based on only 4 occupants; we paid an additional $80 per night for our group of six, but Colin didn't know at check-in how many of us were coming (we could have kept that $160!). Everything he told us on arrival is on lists the house, and could also be put in an email to keep check-in contactless as advertised (to be fair, he sent an email the day before with a few issues in and around the house that I didn't have time to reply to). He and the others live in a separate building at one end of the porch and are working on the property at a fairly constant rate so they're frequently around at odd hours, but always keep to themselves. The biggest issue for us, however, was that there is just too much house for them to keep fully clean.
At check-in, Colin told us they can't be sure each of the 100+ pieces of silverware is clean so we should run the dishwasher before leaving... and this reminded him he'd meant to put a chlorine tab in the hot tub before we arrived. Linens are in a hall closet so they're not needlessly washing dozens of towels between every guest, but we still ended up with dirty items that should not have been in rotation. We quickly ended up with blackened feet from the acres of tiled floor, and our socks and pant cuffs were covered in fur from rugs that had not been vacuumed since the last time guests brought pets. This was all the more frustrating because checkout is an early 10am, but our advance request for an extra hour was denied because they had to start cleaning at that time to get ready for more guests that night; although we were out of the house before 10am, no cleaning was underway when we drove away at 10:15. None of this is a dealbreaker, mind you, but it didn't quite make the grade for a paid hospitality venue. Even so, everything was magical overall - we wished we'd had another day and look forward to coming back!

This location is amazing! It is so quiet. The views are breathtaking. The beds are some of the most comfortable of any rental house we've ever stayed at. The layout of the house was perfect for our two families to stay. One "wing" has the master bedroom with an en suite bath and one bedroom with a half bath across from it and the other "wing" has 3 bedrooms with private full baths in each. Plenty of towels! The great room, dinning room, wrap-around porch and hot tub were a good places to be all together. The labyrinth was a special place to walk and witness the surrounding beauty.
It's a 5 star property with a few concerns that bring it below that. First, the house was not as clean as one would expect, especially at this price point (ie: food in sink, dishwasher full, black bottom feet from walking barefoot), another disappointment was the numerous chipped dishes and bowls. And a contactless entry would have been preferred (everything mentioned upon arrival could have been in a note) and one thing that wasn't mentioned that should have been high on the list of things to know, if not at the top, was that the kids should not be left unattended with the ranch dog, Fluffy. The dog is sweet, but unpredictable. The youngest in our group (7 y/o) was petting it and someone else moved away from him and the dog lunged at the 7 y/o neck. When we told the owner he showed little concern and said that the dog will "protect itself".
Also, it would have been helpful to know ahead of time that the big double refrigerator in the kitchen was broken (and would be for months). There was a smaller replacement fridge located outside on the porch which was only mildly inconvenient (but, unfortunately, it froze our fruits and veggies).
Lastly, the latch on the backdoor was broken and would blow open and a screen was missing on a bedroom window (that was open upon arrival) leading to our son waking to many mosquito bites on his face and legs.
We hope this helps fellow travelers to prepare for their stay (bring slippers and bug spray ;0) and gives the owners helpful feedback to make future visits even better...it truly is a beautiful location!
