Super cute hotel and great walkable places to go.

When we first arrived, it was less than what we expected based on the outside. Not that there was anything wrong with it. It was just different. We were very surprised to find how lovely this hotel was and how comfortable and quiet it was. Our room was very clean, comfortable, and very quiet. Perfect for a great nights sleep after a long busy day of fun. The front office staff were pleasant and the office very clean. I would definitely recommend this hotel. The only thing that was a little disappointing was when hotels say 'free' breakfast it is generally a little more than an egg and cheese sandwich and coffee.

Great room. The hotel is much better than it looks. Awesome service.

Super friendly receptionist!

Nothing fancy, but close to downtown and well maintained . Road noise, but you are downtown. Room was warm, even with heat supposedly off.

It was a great room where we were able to have snacks and some drinks before we went out…We are already making plans to return in the warmer months to enjoy the really nice outdoor public spaces.

Loved the creativity of the motel upgrade but still some odd design choices made (especially in the rooms). Additionally there was very little updating to the bathrooms.

I was in the area with an unhappy situation. The hotel was welcoming, quiet, so near some food options. It has a cute style and was clean and had everything needed. The person in the lobby was helpful and pleasant.

Used to be better and I let things go last time because service was awesome but not this time. Shower head is flimsy and water stream is weak. Only one night stand on one side. Bed is super uncomfortable.

This place is amazing! Clean, friendly staff. Close to downtown Detroit and has an amazing breakfast option. I would definitely stay here again.

Very friendly staff. Doesn't look like much from the outside, but very clean and comfortable. A little noisy overhead, but typical for a 1st floor room

This is my second time staying at this hotel. The staff is always extra friendly and the rooms are always soooo clean. They reverse the deposit when they say they will as well. It’s so cute at this property. I will always come here when I need a little low key spot to stay in.

Staff was great at check in. Room was clean and cozy. Have a outside area with tables and heaters. Close to restaurants, shopping and bars.

Fun, funky little place that has been brought back to life by new ownership. That said, our room's thermostat didn't work and after returning from a late night out with friends, we sweltered in 80 degree heat. Otherwise, great place, would stay again.

Staff was helpful and friendly; room was cute, clean, and comfy; the only small downside was the sound of foot traffic outside in the morning!

This was my second stay and while I paid for the same type of room as the first time, this room was a downgrade. The room was very stuffy and smelled as if it needs an air purifer. The first room has a nice wall unit for air and heat. This room had a broken wall ac unit and the heat was not reliable.
The bathroom had hair in it, and the sheets had a blood looking stain on it.
I wish the room was kept up to basic standards because I really did enjoy my first stay and the location. Not sure I will return

This was our third time staying here when traveling from out of state to visit friend and family, we used to live in Royal Oak. Our OpenKey wouldn't work, so we just got a regular key card at the front desk which wasn't really a big deal. When we did get in our room, it was 80F!?! Immediately turned the heat off and the AC unit on the lowest setting and high fan speed. Had some issues getting our TV to work properly, but eventually unplugged it and plugged it back in then no issues. Overall, it's a nice place to stay close to downtown when you don't want to pay $270 a night for the Hyatt. Will stay here a fifth time when we're back in town in 2024.

Wonderful retro motel. Staff were so welcoming. Close proximity to downtown Royal Oak not 15 min downtown Detroit. Liquor store two doors down and breakfast next door.
Great job turning an older motel into a fresh new location. Nice sitting area with gas fireplaces.
Will return for other events.
All round great experience!

Cute retro hotel totally renovated. Fun outdoor area with seating and fireplaces. Very friendly staff. Looking forward to going back in the summer for one of their outdoor concerts.

It might not be a 5 star hotel, but for what it is, it’s absolutely 5 stars.

It served its purpose, i was expecting a larger room but it was clean and comfortable.

I was impressed by the cleanliness and aesthetics of the property. It reminded me of the retro-inspired place I stayed at in Wildwoods, NJ. Staff was quite eager to help out and give recommendations. I think the one issue I had was the stairway to the second floor. I'm clumsy, so that stairway was scary. The middle courtyard would be fun in warmer weather.

A renovated older property done very well. I will stay again

The exterior and parking lot are in terrible need of renovation. The heating unit is in need of repair, appears the fan baring may be going as it makes noise for 10 to 15 seconds after shutting down as the fan comes to a stop. The property is very much over priced. It has the appearance of a sex only hotel versus lodging for those looking to enjoy downtown.

Very friendly staff. Rooms are nice. Could use maintenence (like air conditioner, bathroom door). Room was pretty clean. Nothing too bad, could just use updating. Location is extremely convenient for walking to Royal Oak. Staff is very professional and courteous. The whole hotel has a good vibe and is affordable.

Marty at the front desk was fantastic! We arrived for a show at Royal Oak Music Theatre at a busy time on Saturday afternoon. Marty handled everyone in a timely manner while giving us walking directions and helpful tips about the venue. Thank you Marty! We will definitely stay here again when attending shows at Royal Oak Music Theatre. Our room was clean and spacious and the location is ideal.

I stayed for one night, on my way to visit family. I really enjoyed my stay. They put a lot of thought into making this place stylish enough to stand out from your average hotel/motel.
I generally stay away from motels because I feel like they are more noisy, but i did not have that problem on this stay. Close by to local food options, and the room was very clean. The staff was friendly. I would definitely stay again.

This place was quaint and nice. You could see it’s age is some aspects but it certainly is not run down or anything. It really was a nice place to stay for our overnight visit.

Super cool hotel its retro/hip and the front desk people are super nice, i dont have alot of complaints about this place id recommend going here if you want a cool hotel stay.

This was a cute little hotel. They have a super nice espresso machine in the lobby that makes delicious coffee. The room was clean but the smell of perfume or cleaning supplies was a little overpowering. I'd stay here again.

It is a fun campy hip hotel, the vibe is right. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. For an old hotel, we were very happy with our experience and would definitely stay again.

This motel was okay. We only stayed one night so it was fine for our needs. We would stay again, but not likely for a longer trip.
It's an older property that I imagine they're slowly updating. They've clearly added some interesting amenities like hammocks and yard games in the little lot out front, which is a cool idea, but we werent there long enough to make use of them, plus it was pretty chilly, so didn't add any value for us.
Most of the rooms doors face the outside of the building so I was concerned about noise, but it was fairly quiet.
The first room we had, we entered and the room was not cleaned. The lady at the front desk was super apologetic and got us a different room right away, and she made sure to give us one near where we already parked so we didnt need to move our car again, which was thoughtful.
Second room was cleaned, but definitely aged judging from the slight, lingering stale cigarette smell that most old motels seem to have. Bed was super super firm. Coffee pot, microwave, minifridge available. A couple modest towels. Bathroom felt older as well, minus a very nice large rainfall shower head, and to our suprise, the water pressure and heat in the morning was very good. Simple checkout in the morning.
The few times we spoke with employees they were all super friendly and helpful.
Its not fancy, it definitely has room for improvement, but it fit the bill and did the job for a simple overnight after a concert at the nearby Royal Oak Music Hall.

I had to scramble for housing when my hostess got COVID. Hotel Royal Oak was convenient and well located. I had a very late check-in and they conveniently left the key under the mat at my room and called to let me know the room number. My room had a deep, old smoky smell but was otherwise clean and comfortable. As a solo traveler, I definitely would have appreciated more security on the door- particularly since there is no lobby to traverse between my door and the street. I would have appreciated knowing that there was no elevator. Finally, I appreciate that it's an older hotel but there were big gaps in the bathroom tiling and the furniture definitely showed signs of wear. When I checked out on Sunday the young women at the front desk was short and brief. Would have appreciated a little more customer service. With all this said - would probably stay there again.

Wonderful staff. Cute 1950s architecture, nicely updated. There was a noisy bunch of folks in the common play area, but they were having fun so it's hard to be mad about it.

love this place. upgraded the room this time and it was wonderful. the front desk young woman was so awesome, nice and helpful. just wish no plug in air freshener. unplugged and aired it out.

We’ve stayed at HRO multiple times in the past few years and we always love it! They’ve really amped up the fun and quirky vibes while retaining the retro feel of this mid-century motel. Plus, it’s so close to dozens of great restaurants, shops, and performance venues. We saw a Friday night show at the LC Arena, and it was fantastic not to drive an hour home to Toledo, but t just drive a little ways up the road to get a great night’s sleep and take it easy!

Clean and comfortable. Keypad on door difficult to use. Unable to open door for 20 minutes each time. Called for assistance and was told to call the actual hotel not the help desk.

Great place to stay. Very comfortable, has everything you could need. Plus awesome vintage flair.
