About this bed and breakfast

Located just one block from Main Street in the Historic District this 125 year old Victorian home is luxury at it's finest. The owner, Maggie Gillespie, is well known for her artistic talent in everything from decorating to her elegant floral arranging. Enjoy total relaxation on the front porch of the Gillespie House with it's comfortable rockers and gliders. The foyer has all the charm of days gone by with its tasteful and refined antiques. A common areal located downstairs is decorated eloquently with comfort in mind... it is an area of mellowness and indulgence for guests. There is also an awesome large limestone fireplace with a crackling fire in the living room. Upstairs are two comfortable eclectic special suites. The West Suite has a king antique bed, large secluded whirlpool and a separate shower. The sitting area has large flat screen TV, a wonderful antique sleigh bed (for a third person to sleep) and wonderful skylights above the sleigh bed for that vast feel of openness and nature. The East Suite offers a queen bed, placed under two skylights to enjoy sleeping under the stars. A (single) whirlpool tub and shower is in the bath. The sitting area has a comfy sofa placed to enjoy the large screen cable television. Fresh flowers are part of the ambiance found in this romantic accommodation. If you are having a special occasion call your hostess, as a floral designer she can definitely meet your needs. Another special area of this property is the gardens on the back side of the property. Enjoy the garden with it's many beautiful plants and seasonal flowers. Things to keep in mind: - Children are allowed at the house but we ask that they are able to negotiate stairs. - The owners, the Gillespies, live onsite in a suite at the back of the house but do use the kitchen downstairs, so you will likely see them during your stay. - Guests will not have access to the kitchen downstairs. House Rules as Required by the City of Fredericksburg's Short Term Rental Ordinance - Observe the City of Fredericksburg Quiet Hours (10pm to 7am in residential zones). No music of any kind after 10 pm. - The City of Fredericksburg is a Dark Sky Community with outdoor lighting restrictions. You (VRBO) need to immediately remove this listing from your service. To start, it's very deceptive. The property "management" is not upfront about what this is, which is a disgusting, creepy room rental. It is NOT a bed & breakfast. Which I wouldn't wish my worst enemy to eat a damn thing from the people who run it, much less, cook in that kitchen! The management team/owners are deceptive. They are not transparent in their listing. That's strike one. They don't leave the space you're in while there. One of them took it upon themselves to go into (at least) one of the rooms while my friends were gone and pulled down the sheets to her bed. No, this wasn't a fancy service where they neatly fold the sheet and cover over and leave a mint. No, they lifted the cover and sheet as if they were looking for something. Strike two. The last straw was when I got back with them and LUCKILY, went in with them... that's when I saw the kitchen.... dirty dishes in the sink and cockroaches walking on the counter. This is when I investigated further. Went through a door (nothing posted saying, "Do Not Enter") only to find more of a mess and another door. That's when I found out these filthy people were there. DO NOT BOOK THIS PLACE. IT'S DISGUSTING! VRBO, you need to remove them and restrict them from ever posting again.

This location was quaint and charming, but COMPLETELY different than the listing described. This is NOT an entire house as the listing leads you to believe! There are two suites on the top floor, and the property managers live in the home. There is no true access to the garden, and it is uncomfortable to use the living and dining rooms downstairs because the owners come and go through the kitchen that you’re not allowed to use. Days before your stay, you’ll receive an email with details that clue you into the fact you will be sharing a house with the owners, but it’s too late to cancel at that point. The place is cute, but could definitely use some upgrades in the bedrooms and bathrooms. We walked around back to see the garden, but it’s a little junky and inaccessible to guests. The property managers are sweet, but they had no idea who was staying at the house, which leads me to believe they do not really manage the rooms or property. The location is great, and easy access to Main St. If this was listed as a B&B (which it somewhat is), I would completely understand and still may have stayed here. But, it’s an awful feeling to realize you’ve been led to believe something that’s untrue, and then to get to the property and the manager doesn’t even know he has guests staying, and will be in the house with you.

As you know we only stayed one night. The house needs to be brought up to your standards of cleanliness. Plus Mr Gillespie was under the impression he could come in and out at anytime day or night. My sister n law felt bad so she went downstairs to lay on the couch from 12am-3am. Mr Gillespie asked why someone slept on the couch. The only way he knew this was he came in while she dozed. At 3 am she came back up after seeing a large rat in the living room. Also the suite we were in did not have a lock on the door. I will not post a review on social media as I feel it is an issue with the owner and not your service. Just not what I have come to expect from your service.

The house was cute and clean. The outside areas were a bit run down and cluttered, but especially the back garden area. And although we understand things are different during Covid the “continental breakfast” provided was disappointing. It consisted of Little Debbie pastries, cereal packs most of which were kiddie cereals like Cocoa Puffs and a very random selection of Keurig coffees. It seems a B&B could do better, even in the age of Covid. We only met the husband,Mike, and he was very friendly. We had a wonderful time in Fredericksburg, but would not choose this house again.

Property and location are great. We stayed there with another couple and the rooms are across the hall from each other, both have separate seating area and bath, so perfect for couples. The home is old style charm and the artwork throughout the home is beautiful. Our host were perfect! We will stay again.
