Perfect! We loved our stay. Very clean and homey feeling. Beds were very comfortable. Loved the walk to the sound. Nestled away for quietness and privacy. Location was great. Host was wonderful and very quick to communicate when I add questions. We were aware of the steps but we were determined to stay there. Definitely stay here again. However, suggestion for us, pack lighter or replace steps with a ramp to pull luggage. Ha! It was still worth staying at this charming cottage! Thank you for a wonderful memory at Roanoke Island.

An absolutely beautiful cottage. Manteo is the best place to stay to explore all parts of outer banks. Already planning return trip!

Host has everything you need at this house. Beautiful and very comfortable home. Great centralized location for visiting the Outer Banks. Host is very accommodating and sweet.

Cottage on the Hill was a great place to say! The sound behind the cottage was beautiful and well worth the walk. They had chairs for us to use as well down and the house came with plenty of toilets items, cookware, etc. and the decor gave it that homey and beach feel. The owner June is very sweet and easy to communicate with. Highly recommend for any families wanting to get away from the big tourists areas!!

We have been visiting the outer banks for the last 9 years. We typically stay ocean front in Avon. We wanted to try something different this year. I’m so glad we did. The cottage on the hill was perfect for my family of 5. The cottage was very clean and well stocked. We enjoyed sitting on the decks in the morning. The private beach is attached to banana island, we basically had the island to ourselves during the week, however the weekends were very busy. We enjoyed the kayaks, paddle boards and fishing immensely. June was very sweet and quick to answer any questions. Thanks for sharing your amazing home with us!

Owners are great. House is lovely and cozy. Great privacy. Peaceful and quiet location. Just what we needed. Walk to the sound with semi private beach was wonderful too.

We took our two grandchildren, ages 6 & 8 for a getaway to make special memories. The cottage was so perfect for us. It was clean, well- appointed and beautifully decorated. The children loved the sound. They fished and caught crabs and we explored the extended sandbar that was just a short walk away. Getting to and from the sound was an adventure for them as you take a winding path through the woods, up and down stairs and across short boardwalks. They giggled the whole time. The cottage was very close to activities. We visited the aquarium, Festival Park and The Lost Colony which was exceptional and beyond our expectations. Even if we had not left the property, it was perfect enough to entertain the children. The front deck had the outdoor shower which they found so entertaining and the back porch made you feel like you were up in the trees. Beautiful wildlife. We are used to taking them to the beach where you have to hold their hands and stay close because of the waves. At the sound, they were free to splash, play, dig, fish, and romp to their hearts delight and we could supervise from our chairs. We had they whole section of beach area to ourselves. The evening sunsets were spectacular and we took so many pictures for them to keep forever. Thank you to Miss June, the owner, for your hospitality and kindness. The Cottage on the Hill is a perfect place to make memories.

This was a lovely place to stay! Having the little beach on the Sound was great for our baby's first beach experience. It was a short walk through the woods with some stairs, but it was worth it to have our own little space without any waves. June was helpful.

Well maintained and beautifully decorated. We truly enjoyed being able to use it as our starting and ending point each day.

Beautiful cottage. Easy to find as well. Some stairs, so.. Super clean and the water quality in the house is excellent. Location is the perfect mid way point for the Outer Banks. Bought our own fresh seafood and cooked it most nights. The kitchen has everything you need. Thank you very much, June.

Everything was perfect! The house was very clean and well stocked. All that was needed was just groceries. Close enough to everything but just far enough away from the busy area. Loved hearing the birds during the day!

The Cottage on the Hill did not disappoint. The sound access was truly amazing, it was a bit of a walk but worth every second. As others have said, it just shows you how out of shape you are. My daughter loved the upstairs room with the Jack and Jill bathroom. June thought of everything. We wish we had spent more time on the sound but the days just got away exploring the Outer Banks. We would have missed downtown Manteo if my daughter had not wanted ice cream. The ice cream shop Laughing Lollipop even reopened for us as google had their hours wrong but the owner was in her car eating dinner. Truly a delight of a vacation for our first time in the Outer Banks. Don't overlook this house! The sound is truly peaceful and a nice place to unwind at the end of the day. And weather wise in April we had a perfect week. Thank you for opening your home to us.

This is our second stay at the cottage. We love the private location, the peace & quiet, and the private beach. It's an easy drive to the main OBX area, but nice to leave all the traffic and come back to the quiet maritime forest. The cottage is perfect for the 3 of us; it is very comfortable and has everything we need. Another great stay!

This place is cozy and big enough for a family of 4 - 5. Our young boys loved the private beach and we visited it every day. The shallow waters and availability of multiple water sports equipment (stand up paddle board, kayaks) was a huge plus. Would highly recommend for anyone with a small family. You can see in the pictures, but there is a about a 2 story staircase to bring in all your luggage. No big deal for me but wanted to point it out.

Only a short stay for my husband and I in Manteo to attend an October wedding at the N.C. Aquarium. Plenty of other places to visit around OBX if we had more time like Jockey's Ridge, the Wright Brothers Attraction, Wild Horses etc. Our 3 teenagers enjoyed kayaking, watching the tides, and digging canals in the sand bars at the private beach in front of the property. The house is nested on a hill, and it was nice just sitting on the balcony watching and listening to the birds in the canopy of the tree tops. The hosts live a couple of houses away and were very welcoming.

We had plenty of privacy in this hidden gem, nestled away on a private lane sitting on a hill. The steps up and down were a bit much for us to manage so it was not as enjoyable as other trips. Remnants of Tropical Storm Ian blew though the area while we were there and the sounds of the storm were barely audible inside. A lovely stay

This lovely home is tucked away in the forest with sound access. There are bikes, kayaks, stand up paddle boards, and a canoe to use! The beach access was great and we had a lot of fun enjoying the water. The home was very clean and decorated nicely. The beds were comfortable and appliances were in great condition. It was a pleasure to meet the homeowners as they are a wonderful couple with great recommendations and information to make your vacation more enjoyable! The location is fantastic. There are several things to do on the island as well as a central location to head north or south to experience all the Outer Banks has to offer!

We spent a whole week at this property and loved every minute. The house was beautifully decorated and clean and equipped with everything we needed as far as kitchen items. We would spend several hours each day out sightseeing but come home and relax, spending quality time together. The access to the private beach with kayaks, chairs and hammock was the icing on the cake! If you ever visit Roanoke Island, this is a great location to rent.

Overall, it was a great stay for 5 of us (2 kids, 2 grandmas, 1 adult and a dog). The owners were really nice and accommodating. We enjoyed wakeboards, kayaking, splashing in shallow water (water is shallow on beach, so not much swimming for adults but kids loved it) and riding bikes to ice cream shop and across islands, which were readily available to us at no extra cost. There is Jeanettes pier 15 minutes ago with ocean water but waves were really high for grandmas as it was knocking them down, but 36 years old me and kids loved it. The house was clean and had everything you need including Keurig, shampoo, and many other important staff. The path to the beach with river and ocean water is 5 minutes, but beware of 100 steps back and forth, which I enjoyed as an extra exercise. Even grandmas found it as a great exercise even with their bad knees. Ice cream shop is 13 minutes ride on bikes and grocery store is just 6 minute drive.

Over all we had a great experience. The owners were really nice and if you needed them they were right there. The cottage was lovely and very clean.

This property is amazing! Very secluded on a cul de sac, in a maritime "forest". Very peaceful and 2 wonderful decks to enjoy the view, the peace, and your beverages of choice. There are stairs (approximately 30ish) to get up to the house, so keep that in mind if have arthritis in the knees, handicap family members, wee little ones, etc. Short walk on a little nature path to the Sound. Was very beautiful and great for little ones. We visited Coquina Beach which is a little south from Nags Head, and highly recommend it. About a 20 minute drive with ample parking, restrooms, showers, and lifeguards. Plenty of shells to be collected there also. Met the owners, Quentin and June on the private little beach by the cottage, and they are very polite and make sure everything is up to your standards there. We overpacked amenities just to find out absolutely zero of them were needed. That was a first for us. We had our 2 year old, so if traveling with a toddler or infant, a pack and play would be needed. Would definitely stay here again for our next visit to OBX and will be recommending it to friends and family.

Another awesome stay at Cottage on Hill
As always, this property provided the perfect secluded getaway. Tucked away in the maritime forest, but only minutes from downtown Manteo and the OBX. Looking forward to our next visit.

June and Quentin Bell were wonderful! They made sure all of needs were met while staying at the cottage. The private beach was beyond our expectations! The most relaxing and beautiful site! We fell in love with Manteo and hope to go back to the Cottage on the Hill!

Near everything/away from it all
This proved to be the perfect retreat for us while we attended a large family gathering in Nag's Head. The house is comfortable, with a soothing decor, and the kitchen is well-equipped if you don't want to have to go out for every meal (though you're just minutes away from restaurants if you do). We especially appreciated the thoughtful array of pots and pans, ample dishware and knives of various helpful sizes that are kept sharp enough to use safely. And the canoe and paddleboards provided at the shore open up all kinds of fabulous adventures. If you prefer rest to exploration, having decks on opposite sides of the house means you can move to stay in the sun -- or in our case, the shade -- throughout the day, and the cul-de-sac location keeps things quiet and private. We found great joy in the chorus of birdsong during the day and in the awesome firefly display at night. The only small flaw was a lingering smell of cleaning fluid (or fumigation spray?) in the house, but everything was very clean and in good working order. The hosts are welcoming and quickly responsive to questions. One of our top vacation rentals so far.

We really enjoyed this rental! It was a little chilly during our stay but we did have a warmer day where we were able to enjoy the private beach and explore the sand bar. Our son loved it. The house was very clean and had everything we needed. The grounds were beautiful with all of the azaleas blooming. The location was a great jump off point for checking out different areas of the Outer Banks. We explored from Carolla to Hatteras and on Roanoke Island of course. Highly recommend.
