Located on a private island within the gates of the Colleton River Club*, this cottage sits on one of the prettiest, most unique sites in the Hilton Head area. The 'Devil's Elbow Cottage' is nestled among ancient Live Oak trees overlooking the marshes and waters of the Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge. Enjoy the best of both worlds. Experience the Lowcountry Bluffton / Hilton Head region of years past yet be a short drive from all of the shopping and amenities of one of the world's foremost resort areas. This very comfortable cottage has high ceilings and large windows that create a light atmosphere and lets you enjoy this special setting. Built in 1992 and recently updated, this little house sits adjacent to the 'main' house. They are two of only three houses on the island. Listen to the warblers in the oaks and the snapping shrimp in the marsh below as you doze off for your afternoon nap on the screened porch. Set the crab trap from the dock or cast a net for shrimp and enjoy the seafood bounty of the Lowcountry. Sight fish for Redfish from a kayak on the flats of the adjacent islands. If the natural world gets to be too much for you it is a ten minute drive to highway 278 and all of the shopping, dining, golf and beaches you could desire. Visit the galleries of Bluffton's old town. Take the beautiful drive to Charleston or spend a day in Savannah or Beaufort. *Colleton River Club is a private community and the amenities are for the use of members and their guests only. This beautiful house was perfect to escape and unwind. The house was nestled in the woods with breathtaking views. Peter and his family were so very pleasant to deal with and very accommodating. Will definitely stay there again.

This VRBO is exactly as advertised. The home is lovely and set-up perfectly for a family, couples, or small group of friends. The location within Bluffton is great - everything is accessible, and Hilton Head Island isn't far either. The best thing about this rental is the setting - you're in the marsh, near a river, and birds and other wildlife abound. My kids and I loved every minute of this vacation and 100% will rent this place again!

Wow! This was one of our most unique rental experiences ever. The name, Devil's Elbow Cottage, caught our attention when reviewing the property online. Our arrival did not disappoint. A narrow land bridge just wide enough for a vehicle connects the island to mainland. A carriage drive winds through woodland and pasture leading to your arrival. Deer, crabs, innumerable birds and even an armadillo abound on the island. A slice of heaven that has been loved and protected by the family for almost a century. A short, easy drive into Bluffton and miles of bike trails are icing on the cake for this property. Can't wait for our next visit here.

Great place to relax and do nothing, which is what we wanted. Place is clean and well maintained. Never did find the dock so if you’re interested in that then ask owner for directions. He is very responsive as he took care of a broken coffee pot right away.

I need to apologize for the late review of this wonderful cottage. My wife and I stayed the 9-12 June as a weekend get away for our anniversary. As others have mentioned, the photos cannot describe the beauty of the “Devil’s Elbow Cottage”. I am a very early riser and being able to sit in a comfy chair on that screened in back porch with a cup of coffee is about as good as it gets. The cottage itself has everything you need right down to Dove soap in the shower. Other then the occasionally airplane over head it is extra quiet yet close to everything. I might add the couch is perfect for napping (ask me how I know). We truly appreciate the Cram family allowing us the opportunity to share a little part of their world.

The cottage was even better than we expected. It looked amazing online but photos can’t really do justice to the unique location of the property nestled in the marshes and how breathtaking it is. Even though you are ten minutes from all the amenities you could want and the lovely town of Blufton, you feel as though you’ve landed in another world far away from the bustle of everyday life. It literally took our breath away and we’d just shake our head in disbelief as we drove down the winding driveway. We saw an eagle, deer and even an alligator and I could watch the Spanish moss swaying on the old oak trees surrounding the cottage from the screened porch for hours. It was just magical and we can’t say enough nice things about how wonderful this place was.

Wonderful place to hideaway in a world of your own! So peaceful and beautiful, loved seeing all the wildlife even saw a little gator ! The host was extremely nice and answered any questions we had without hesitation.I would love to return!!!!

The cottage was perfect for our family of four. Spectacular views of the marsh, access to fishing and plenty of opportunities for walking, biking and exploring the surrounding property. The cottage had everything we needed and the screened in porch was amazing. Peter provided lots of great information about the surrounding area. We will definitely be back!

My wife and I stayed over on a long weekend to celebrate our 30th anniversary. The properties beauty was surpassed only by its remoteness. 10 min from the bustle of outlet malls we were surrounded by the peace and quite of the SC marsh. Our only neighbors being the deer and birds of the south. We enjoyed the solitude and caught several nice redfish and trout off the dock.

What a beautiful, peaceful and perfect property! We enjoyed nature on this little slice of Heaven, had fun fishing and just listening to all of sounds. The cottage was perfect, and the hosts were very friendly and accommodating. Will definitely return and highly recommend!

It is equipped with everything one would need including beach chairs and umbrella, high end linens, a well stocked kitchen with necessary skillets and cookware - we did cook several meals, and a washer/dryer. Our favorite spot was on the screened porch where we observed the sights and sounds of nature. Off the beaten path but so close to the fun of Hilton Head golf, beach and restaurants. Highly recommend for a relaxing getaway.

Timelessly perfect
From the second we arrived, we were entranced. This place is indeed timeless, soulful and peaceful. The cottage is lovely, comfortable and perfectly perched on the island. The views of the ever-changing salt marsh and abundant wildlife were spectacular! To be there on Earth day was just icing on the cake as this place is one of the finest places I've ever seen to observe the Earth "living " and in balance. Peter was very accessible and helpful. Highly recommend this place and definitely want to go back!

Unforgettable! A Gem in Nature!
This cottage has everything and more that you could possibly want in a vacation rental. The location is breathtaking – palmettos, pine trees, moss-draped oaks, the marsh with its tide going in and out almost at your doorstep - picture perfect! The cottage is located on Bears Island with a one lane dirt road “land bridge “as your introduction to this hidden treasure. The architectural design of the cottage is beautiful… Well laid out, great attention given to all details, from the open kitchen and living area surrounded by beautiful windows to take in the scenery… To the comfortable large master bedroom with an exquisite window seat! The screened-in back porch is lovely and so very relaxing – always the place to have morning coffee and wine at sunset. In fact we would probably never want to even leave the cottage if there weren’t so many interesting adventures in the low country and great restaurants in Bluffton to enjoy during the day. Our host, Peter, was extremely accommodating, although we never had any problems at all when we needed to contact him. He even offered to let us check in early and check out a little later… Unheard of in any other vacation rental where we have stayed! We very much enjoyed his photography displayed in the cottage, along with all the other beautiful decorative touches throughout the cottage. When beauty matches comfort, delight and enjoyment result… Hope we can visit again!

The most unique experience with the feeling your are no where close to civilization. You can't relax here in the midst of nature with the most dramatic views of the way this earth might have once been. Not enought adjectives to describe.

Charming cottage with beautiful views
The house exceeded our expectations! Light streams through the many windows. The bedrooms are very comfortable and roomy. We loved the large walk-in closet that allowed us to keep our belongings organized and out of the way. The kitchen is very well stocked. And we could have set on the lovely screened porch all day. The owner was so responsive and went above and beyond to make our stay wonderful. We can’t wait to return!
